During his time at MLC he joined the Minnesota Army National Guard. He also met his wife, Hannah, there, and they got married after she graduated. He was deployed to Iraq from 2005 – 2007. After that he continued at MLC and graduated in 2008, receiving his first call to teach grades 3-5 in St. Paul, MN. He taught there for eight years until he came to teach at New Hope.
Phil enjoys many outdoor activities like running, hiking, camping, swimming, gardening, and the like. He especially enjoys these activities with his wife and four children. Phil would love to talk about many parts of the Bible that give him comfort and hope, but one that is dear to him is Ephesians 2:8-9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not by works, so that no one can boast.”
The opportunities to share his faith in Jesus as his Savior, and his love of teaching make him very excited to be at New Hope!

As far as teaching academics, she loves the task of laying the foundations of reading and math.
